What I want from a product management tool

We don’t need another workflow management tool. We need a tool that assesses opportunities, aligns stakeholders, makes bets and analyses user behaviour to report on outcomes. We need a tool that helps to filter and focus.

Assess opportunities

Collect, collate and anaylse:

  • Existing user behaviour
  • New user research
  • Market research
  • Strategic priorities

Pattern analysis

Select information from research, perform thematic analysis to pull out themes.

Identify opportunities.

Make bets

Decide which opportunities to pursue.

Write hypotheses about potential outcomes (expected user behaviour and business results).

Align stakeholders

Using the opportunity analysis, create a business case, including:

  • Value proposition
  • Risk analysis
  • Cost estimates
  • Return on investment

Approval

Publish to stakeholders gor review and comments.

Approval from Finance for the investment, approval from senior stakeholders that the business case aligns to strategy.

Publish to roadmap (not a delivery plan that says when the solution will be live because we’re still talking about opportunities at this stage).

Validation

Decide how to validate.

  • MVP
  • Pilot
  • Audience segment

Generate User Stories to send to other tools like ADO.

Track outcomes

Connect to analytics tools and hypotheses to report on user behaviour and how well it’s tracking against the hypotheses.
